To remove the crankshaft pulley on a 1948 Farmall Cub, I use a gear puller set with a bearing separator. This allows the pulley to be removed without applying excessive stress to the flanges of the pulley. These flanges have been known to break under high stress. This particular gear puller set can be purchased from any well know Automotive Tool Supply Company such as Harbor Freight or JC Whitney. The bearing separator should be capable of spreading open sufficiently for the nominal 4 ½” OD pulley flanges.
You will also need a bolt for the puller to push against. This bolt is ½” – 13 and should be 5” long and threads into the front pulley where the hand crank engages.
The pictures below show the step-by-step procedure. Please note that these pictures were used as demonstration only. As you can see, the pulley had been previously removed in order to take off the front engine timing cover.
Please be
sure to wear safety glasses during this procedure. Also, don't forget to be patient and use generous portions of
your favorite penetrating lubricant such as PB Blaster or Kroil. I wasn't in a big rush, so it took me 3-4
days. A couple of turns, spray and
wait. It will eventually come off. I suppose heat could be used to speed up the
process. Good Luck.
